1V1’s and 2V2’ s with Conditioning, Like They Run it at Le Moyne!
From Coach Dan Sheehan
After completing my third podcast with Coach Sheehan, I again came away amazed at his commitment to his team and their unique talents from season to season, making practice interesting and fun, as well as his creative focus on the little things. We interview a lot of great coaches, and this is a great coach.
As we reviewed the ways the coaches at Le Moyne continue to analyze their practice planning, I was reminded of a unique feature of Coach Sheehan’s practices that has remained in place.
Many if not all of the NCAA Lacrosse Coaches will, (following some stick work and shooting and dynamic stretching,) then immediately integrate an extremely fast paced drill, in most cases some type of quick transition drill to truly establish a fast pace for the balance of practice and get the entire team’s energy level up to speed. And in our past conversations Coach Sheehan has shared some great transition drills we have posted on our site. But…
In the case of Le Moyne, they have an interesting and different approach to reach the same goals at the beginning of practice, Coach will immediately get into the ‘meat’ of the practice by running 1V1 and 2V2 lacrosse drills with quick reps as their way to get the team’s energy level up. It was really interesting to me as I often close my practices with the same types of 1V1 lacrosse drills. The competition is high between offense and defense, and we encourage those not immediately in the lacrosse drills to whoot and holler, and we usually compete for a sprint or two, or collecting balls etc. So I have personally seen first hand the energy and the subliminal benefit – but not in this way. Save this thought….
